COVID 19 Update – Tuesday, Aug. 24 – Second Grade to go Remote for Wednesday; Elementary to Prepare for Possible Virtual Learning

Dear STEM School Highlands Ranch Elementary Families,

We were notified today that several students in our second grade have either tested positive for COVID-19, are presumed positive or have pending COVID tests.

As we do with any positive case that we are made aware of, STEM consults with Tri-County Health Department (“TCHD”), the Public Health Agency for the Counties of Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas, Colorado, to investigate and manage an outbreak of COVID-19.

In collaboration with TCHD, we have had to make the decision to move our second-grade students to virtual learning for tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, as we continue to investigate this situation. We will reach out by the end of day tomorrow with further quarantine directions for those considered potentially exposed. This message will also include instructions on the length of time of the virtual learning (if needed) and what to expect.

We understand that some of our families may not have access to laptops. Our IT Department has a limited number of Chromebooks available for our families if needed. Please click here to access the sign-up form if you will need a Chromebook temporarily. Our IT Department will reach out to any families who sign-up, with instructions on how to pick-up your Chromebook.

Your student’s teacher has been informed and will provide an update via email to families on what to expect for next week. We understand that this news is frustrating and can lead to anxious feelings, but our Leadership Team at STEM would like to assure you that we are doing everything that we can to make sure that our students are safe and still getting access to their education.

ALL ELEMENTARY FAMILIES
While we hope that it will not happen, we are asking for all families to begin to prepare for the possibility of transitioning to virtual learning. This would include making sure that your student has access to a laptop, computer or tablet.

As our number of positive and presumed-positive COVID cases continue to increase, we could have to transition our remaining grades to virtual learning for a 14-day period, per TCHD orders. With our outbreak in first grade, and the potential for another outbreak-classification in second grade, we are considered to be at an “Elevated Status.” This means that TCHD would require us to send all students remote, while the affected areas within the Elementary School are deep cleaned.

We will continue to provide updates to our families as soon as we have them. We thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time. Our goal is to keep the option for in-person learning for as long as we can safely do so.

NOTIFYING STEM OF COVID-19 POSITIVE CASE
If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please contact our School Nurse, Mallory Jimenez (nurse@stemk12.org) immediately. She will then notify the appropriate STEM Leadership Team members to then initiate our communication process. Ms. Jimenez will then provide instructions on next steps.

Additionally, if your student is exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19, please keep them home from school and monitor them.

Please reach out to communications@stemk12.org with any questions.

Thank you,

STEM School Highlands Ranch Communications
