COVID Update – Thursday, Aug. 19 – Sixth and Eighth Grade

Dear STEM School Highlands Ranch Secondary Families,

We were notified today that a student in the sixth grade and a student in the eighth grade have tested positive for COVID-19. Both students were instructed to move into isolation and not to return to school until symptoms have gone away. The last date that the sixth grader was in school was Tuesday, Aug. 17, and the last day that the eighth-grader was in school was Friday, Aug. 13.

The sixth-grade student had the following class schedule on Tuesday: Science (Hart-Period 3); Real World Economics (Perret – Period 5); Language Arts (Vander Hook – Period 7); Math (Martin-Period 9).

The eighth-grade student had the following class schedule on Friday: Networking and Cybersecurity (Basu-Period 2); Art (Mishoe-Period 3); Language Arts (Dillon-Period 4); French (Lutz-Period 5); Social Studies (Hoffman-Period 6); Science (Pietrovito-Period 7); Algebra (Tamendjari-Period 8); Study Hall (Nason-Period 9).

If your student was present in any of those classes at the same time, they may have been exposed. We ask that you please monitor them for symptoms of COVID and if they develop any, to please keep them at home.

At this time, STEM will not be conducting contract tracing and will not be requiring quarantining, other than the COVID-positive student. We are asking families to keep any student home who is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

It is at the family’s discretion if they would like to keep their student (who is not COVID positive and not showing any COVID symptoms) home from school, however, we do ask that they please follow the proper attendance procedures by calling the attendance line. We want all COVID-positive students and staff to remain at home.

NOTIFYING STEM OF COVID-19 POSITIVE CASE
If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please contact our School Nurse, Mallory Jimenez (nurse@stemk12.org) immediately. She will then notify the appropriate STEM Leadership Team members to then initiate our communication process. Ms. Jimenez will then provide instructions on the next steps.

CALLING IN ABSENCES
If your student is sick or you are keeping them home out of an abundance of caution, please remember to call our attendance at 303-683-7836. We are asking our teachers to post assignments in their Canvas or Google Classroom courses for students to complete if they are absent.

Parents of Elementary students can reach out to their student’s teacher to let them know that their student will be out.
Secondary students can reach out to their teacher to let them know they will be out.

At this time, there will be no synchronous instruction that will take place for students who are absent. Students will have two days for every one day they are absent to complete their assignments and check-in with their teachers.

Please note: Extended absences start on the 11th school day that a student is absent. If an absence continues past 10 days, parents will need to complete the Extended Absence Form.

Please reach out to communications@stemk12.org with any questions.

Thank you,

STEM School Highlands Ranch Communications
