This is the year more than most, that we need to come together to give thanks for what we have instead of what we have lost. I am grateful that 1,100 students attend STEM each week and almost 200 faculty and staff members are dedicated to serve your family’s educational needs. The massive preparations that began last spring continue daily as we learn better ways to maximize safety.
It was inevitable that positive cases would find their way into our school. What is reassuring is that STEM has contained the few events and not a single school transmission. 100% of these positive cases were infected from external sources. Our school nurse, Karen Lewis RN, has been relentless in her mission to keep STEM as safe as possible. She has worked closely with Robert Hoornstra, COO, to maximize the school’s protocols. Star Ake, CFO and CPA, is the third part of this team to stretch our resources to acquire all identified needs for school safety. All employees have done their part in this effort and I am grateful to each and every one.
Our faculty and staff are in the process of identifying any extra items STEM can purchase with CARES Act funds to maximize their safety. As one teacher leader said, “Disney was able open and their staff felt protected to provide the Disney experience.” Our goal is the same- staff feels protected as we all come to work each day.
STEM’s Board of Directors continues their leadership role to keep STEM focused on the mission with so many competing distractions. Few have any idea of the time commitment. This is one of the most challenging times in our history yet the Board continues to serve all of our school. I am not only grateful, but in awe of their service heart.
There were so many unknowns over the summer as we referenced every expert resource to maximize safety for students and staff. We know so much more now than we did in July on how to live with this virus and protect one another. For this, I am most grateful. Fulfilling our school’s mission during a global pandemic is an enormous daily effort. Thank you to each of you for your part. We are an amazing community of thoughtful and caring individuals that rallied to keep our school open.
Thanksgiving is a time for coming together to be with those we care about through family and friend connections. I wish you the very best Thanksgiving to rest and relax.
Take Care and Stay Healthy!
