Middle School basketball has completed their seasons. All of the teams played hard and improved. Congratulations to all of the players and coaches!
Boys Volleyball played at Windsor on Monday and at D’Evelyn on Wednesday. They lost both matches, but are gaining valuable experience. The team has been competitive in several of the competitions and will continue to improve as the season goes forward.
Speech and Debate – On Friday, Mar. 8 and Sat., Mar. 9, STEM’s speech and debate team traveled to Golden High School and went toe to toe with some of the most elite speech & debate competitors in Colorado, in the Rocky Mountain South National Qualifier Tournament.
Sophia Bertsch competed in Informational Speech; Andrei Nicoara and Timothy Pauka competed in International Extemporaneous Speech; and Emmett Cumbler, Aaron Dologonos, and Drisha Mishra competed in Lincoln Douglas Debate. In addition, four STEM parents, alongside Susan Jones, served as judges, making a great showing for our school that helped bring STEM recognition not just as an up and coming program (more on that below) but as a contributor to the Colorado speech and debate community as well.
For this tournament, instead of gold, silver and bronze medals, the top 3 students in each event received an invitation to nationals in June – a much more coveted prize. Our Rocky Mountain South district is the most competitive of the five Colorado NSDA districts. This was our last and toughest tournament of the year (other than possibly nationals itself).
Our students’ individual performances were simply outstanding. Each STEM debater won at least one round and with rare exception lost rounds in which judges remarked on their official ballots that they could have easily decided the other way. All of our speakers – Sophia, Tim, and Andrei – made excellent showings. In particular:
- In International Extemporaneous Speech, Andrei Nicoara made it to semi-finals and earned two of three second place votes (out of six competitors), in essence missing finals by the closest of margins;
- Also in International Extemporaneous Speech, Timothy Pauka made it to finals and placed 5th overall, earning the second alternate spot; and
- John Griffin won New Coach of the Year – reflecting hard work on the part of the students, parents and Heather Dillon who is coaching the middle school program, as well as John’s dedication to preparing our students for their competitions.
From experienced coaches and judges alike, everyone was astonished to learn that our students were in their first year of competition.
Girls Soccer has been busy as well! The team lost to Elizabeth HS on Monday and then defeated Nederland on Thursday. Congratulations Spartans!
