Athletics Update from Mrs. Jones (12/08/24)

STEM Athletics Update

Winter sports are off and running! Quite literally. Stem has four basketball teams this year and three of them have had multiple games already. Boys varsity, boys JV and Girls Varsity all opened their regular seasons with wins over Denver Academy. The boys JV dominated, while the Girls Varsity managed a comfortable win. The Boys Varsity won a thriller in overtime.  All three teams displayed heart and toughness in their games.

STEM also hosted the first 2 rounds of the Classic Cup Tournament on Thursday and Friday. The Girls suffered a tough loss to a very good Loveland Classical team on the first night, but rebounded to play a well contested game against Liberty Tree. Although they lost the second game as well, the team improves every time they take the floor.

The Boys Varsity won their first game against Liberty Tree and then ran into a phenomenal Loveland Classical team. They played hard but came up short in the end.

Both teams will play their third round games on Saturday at Twin Peaks Academy in Longmont. Good luck Spartans!

Next week the teams will see the Girls Varsity and the Boys JV travel to Kipp Denver Collegiate High School for games on Tuesday, AT Pinnacle Charter on Wednesday and AT Alameda International on Friday.

eSports Smash Brothers Gold team lost their third round playoff match this week, ending a very successful season. Both the Smash and Kart Gold teams played deep into the playoffs. As our teams are young, this bodes well for the future!

Speech/Debate will be participating in the We Didn’t Start the Fire tournament at Overland High School on Saturday, Dec. 7th. This will be their third tournament of the year. Despite being a very young and inexperienced team, they have placed well against tough competition.

Let’s Go Spartans!

Parents – there are MANY opportunities to volunteer for Athletics. We have multiple needs for every home basketball game. You do NOT need to know anything about basketball to help. We need ticket takers as well. Please go to the Athletic Website and click on the volunteer button to see all opportunities.

Middle School basketball registration has closed. We still need coaches for two of our boys teams. If you would like to volunteer please email John Munro at john.munro@stemk12.org to express your interest. Practice days and times will be determined by HRCA and communicated out to the teams. One practice during the week at an HRCA Rec Center and one game on a Saturday.
