COVID Update – 6th Grade Positive Case; 6th Grade Move to Virtual Learning for Monday, 8/23

Dear STEM School Highlands Ranch Sixth-Grade Families,

We received word today that another sixth-grade student has tested positive for COVID-19 and that there are several more with COVID-like symptoms who are currently being tested. The last day the student was at STEM was Friday, Aug. 20.

The sixth-grade student had the following class schedule on Friday: Computer Science (White-Period 2); Science (Hart-Period 3); Social Studies (Voorn-Period 4); Study Hall (Nason-Period 5); Math (Martin-Period 6); Robotics (Reinkensmeyer-Period 7); Theater (Schwartz-Period 8); Language Arts (Vander Hook-Period 9).

As we do with any positive case that we are made aware of, STEM consults with Tri-County Health Department (“TCHD”), the Public Health Agency for the Counties of Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas, Colorado, to investigate and manage an outbreak of COVID-19.

While we only have two confirmed cases of COVID as of this message, we do have several pending test results that our Leadership Team believes will lead to an Outbreak status in our sixth grade. For that reason, we are asking all sixth-grade students to go remote for Monday, Aug. 23 as TCHD continues to investigate.

We will reach out by the end of day tomorrow with further quarantine directions for those considered potentially exposed. This message will also include instructions on the length of time of the virtual learning (if needed) and what to expect.

We understand that some of our families may not have access to laptops. Our IT Department has a limited number of Chromebooks available for our families if needed. Please click here to access the sign-up form if you will need a Chromebook temporarily.

Your student’s teacher has been informed and will provide an update via email to students on what to expect for tomorrow. We understand that this news is frustrating and can lead to anxious feelings, but our Leadership Team at STEM would like to assure you that we are doing everything that we can to make sure that our students are safe and still getting access to their education.

As we see an uptick in COVID-positive cases happening at STEM, we’d like to remind our families to please comply with the following in order to help us continue to be able to serve all of our families with in-person learning, while also keeping our staff safe.

  • If your student is experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please do not send them to school.
  • If you are awaiting a COVID-test result, please do not send your student to school.

Any student that comes to school with symptoms will be sent home. You can reference the Return to Learn Plan to see the COVID-symptom list.

If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please contact our School Nurse, Mallory Jimenez ( immediately. She will then notify the appropriate STEM Leadership Team members to then initiate our communication process. Ms. Jimenez will then provide instructions on next steps.

We appreciate your collaboration during this challenging time. Please reach out to Mrs. Maura Ridder ( or with any questions.

Thank you,

STEM School Highlands Ranch Communications
