My Bio

Jeff Reinkensmeyer is in his third year of teaching Robotics at STEM.   He is an experienced science/engineering teacher and has taught at all levels  – MS, HS, juco, and grad classes.  He has also worked with teachers in China on inquiry learning.

He has a B.S. in Geology and Mineralogy from Ohio State University and an M.S. in Science Education from National-Louis University and has worked in industry.

Some cool things that he has done in his life include:

  • traveling 8500′ underground into the Homestake Gold Mine
  • traveling 10 miles inside a mountain – inside a Lead-Zinc mine
  • discovering an Allosaurus tooth, with root, during a paleontology dig in Wyoming

In his free time, he can be found fishing, working out, relaxing in his garden, kayaking, biking, hiking, or watching his daughter play volleyball.

He is the head coach for STEM’s Science Olympiad Teams, and he teaches the following classes.

  • MS Robotics: In MS Robotics, students learn technical sketching and then learn all about robotics using VEX IQ.
  • Advanced MS Robotics: In Advanced MS Robotics, students review technical sketching, then create a variety of different VEX IQ robots to solve a variety of challenges.
  • Robotics I: In Robotics I, students review technical sketching and then spend the rest of the semester creating and coding VEX V5 robots for various challenges.
  • Robotics II: In Robotics II, students review technical sketching and then spend the rest of the semester creating and coding VEX V5 robots for Battle Bots and other robotics challenges.
  • Engineering 7: In Engineering 7, students learn all about the use of simple machines to create mechanical advantage. Students will apply what they learn to catapults, mousetrap cars, and Rube Goldberg Machines.
