Athletics Update from Mrs. Jones (10/27/24)

STEM Athletics Update

STEM Spartans have been busy again this week. As the Fall seasons come to an end and playoffs begin each game has more meaning, especially to the seniors. This week saw boys Soccer, Cross Country and Golf end their seasons. Some of the athletes have played in their final games as high schoolers. It can be a bittersweet experience for both the athletes and their parents. Coaches and teammates struggle to say goodbye as well.

Boys Soccer

The Varsity team lost a spirited and well played game on Monday vs Loveland Classical.

The STEM Boys’ Soccer Team celebrated seven seniors in Wednesday’s game against Sheridan with a second-half comeback that revved up a record crowd at Marcy Park.

Goals by senior Destwin Eshun and sophomore Lucas Colclasure — as well as several near misses from players including seniors Braden Calme and Avi Thakkar — kept the game in the balance until the very end, with the Rams surviving the Spartans’ comeback attempt to end up with a 4-2 victory.

Senior goalie Andrew Munro (15 saves) kept the Spartans in the game early on, in front of a defense that included three seniors (Evan Choi, Kaden Morrison and Harman Saron), but Sheridan was able to sneak through two goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The momentum remained in the Rams’ favor early in the second half, as they increased the lead to 4-0 — but Eshun’s goal (Matthew Moore assist) proved to be a turning point in the momentum.

The Spartans were relentless in attack to close out the game, with several near-misses finally paying off with Colclasure’s goal after an excellent set up from Camren Irish. STEM’s “never say die” attitude remained until the final whistle, with the equalizing goals unfortunately never materializing.

After the game, parents, fellow students and teachers honored all seven seniors (Munro, Calme, Saron, Morrison, Choi, Eshun and Thakkar) at a picnic that lasted right until sundown — a special season for this year’s seniors that nobody wanted to accept was reaching an end.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team claimed victory over the previously unbeaten and #1 seed in the Foothills league, Loveland Classical in a thrilling 3-1 match. In so doing, the team has almost assured themselves of at least a share of the top spot going into the league tournament. They followed that up with a JV and Varsity win over Sheridan on Thursday. Fantastic way to end the regular season.

Cross Country

In a very tough regional meet, consisting of the 2023 3A state champs and 2A state runners up, the Spartans had a fast finish to their season.  The boys team came in with a 9th place overall finish, led by Juniors Cooper Allen, Preston Martinez, Ben Yoder, and Sophomore Tyler Marquez(with a new personal best) all finished in the top 1/2 of the stacked field, while Freshman Rey Ruiz missed a new PR by less than 1 second.  On the girls side, Sophomore Sarah Hathaway also was in the top half of the field, and Freshman London Treece bettered her personal best by almost 2 minutes.  Special shout out to Seniors Atticus Shure and Aahan Sen who ran their last race as a Spartan, and represented our school admirably.

eSports

Smash Gold team suffered their first loss of the year to Pueblo County while the Blue team lost to Widefield High School.

The Rocket League team beat Cherry Creek 3-0.  Mario Kart Gold team remains undefeated beating Rocky Mountain High School 2-0.  Mario Kart is ranked 5th in the Colorado Region!
