Walking the Beat with Deputy Gabe

Are you ready for the cold weather to come? Part of me is, and part of me is not. Because of all the gear I carry, I enjoy the cold weather as it helps me to stay cool. However, it is difficult to wear my jacket under my vest when it is too cold. Then I get hot, so I need to take it off…so I go back and forth! Regardless, I enjoy the cold weather and the snow. Can’t wait for it.

On a different note, occasionally, the question of “who is responsible for security at our school” comes up. What do you think is the correct answer? A. Deputy Gabe; B. Security Specialist; C. Administrators; D. Everyone at School. I am curious what you chose from the list. But the answer is D…EVERYONE! Everyone is responsible for keeping our school safe. If you see something, say something. If you use an “exit only” door and see someone trying to come in right after you exit, say something! If you see something that is not safe, please bring it to the attention of someone in the office. We want to make sure that you are safe along with everyone else. Have you heard someone saying, “I am sure somebody else will report it?” It doesn’t matter…Please take that first step and let us know what you see that is unsafe so we can work on it. We are all responsible for keeping our campus safe (and homes, too).

With that in mind, I wanted to ask you: Have you heard of Safe2Tell? That is an excellent tool that helps anyone to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and school administrators. Any reports we receive through Safe2Tell are anonymous. Because it is a great tool, I always encourage students to use it responsibly. Keep in mind that making a false report to Authorities is considered a crime. A False Report (one that is submitted by someone knowing it’s false) will take a lot of time for staff and/or law enforcement to investigate. So please encourage your students to use this tool responsibly. Explain to them the difference between a false report and a report in good faith that might be unfounded.

If you want to learn more about Safe2Tell, please visit their website. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe! I can’t tell you enough how thankful I am for having the opportunity to be part of your student’s story. If you have questions, please email me at gabe.uribe@stemk12.org, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Be safe!

Deputy Gabe
