National Honor Society

About NHS

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in the four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

STEM NHS hosts our annual Wish Week, a school-wide fundraiser for Make-a-Wish Colorado. We also engage in numerous on and off-site service projects like assembling Diaper Cakes for birthing centers, creating meal bags for elderly citizens, and assisting local community events.

Eligibility

Scholarship

Sophomores who have a cumulative GPA of 3.85 (weighted) or 3.60 (unweighted) or higher on the 4.0 scale are eligible to apply for their Junior year. Juniors who meet this GPA requirement are also eligible to apply for their Senior year; however, they are not eligible to receive a graduation cord. The NHS chapter at STEM School Highlands Ranch is only open to Juniors and Seniors.

Service

Additionally, students are required to demonstrate a minimum of 20 service hours during the summer before their Junior year. This criteria was altered to 20 service hours since the beginning of one’s high school career for the 2020-2021 academic year (class of 2022) to factor in COVID-19. The former will be reinstated beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.

Leadership

Leadership positions are highly recommended. These can range from club officer positions to leadership conferences.

Character

The ideal student demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and maintains a clean disciplinary record.

Application

NHS application packets will be sent to eligible Sophomores and Juniors in April, and are usually due late-August. The application consists of a resume highlighting the student’s leadership positions, extracurricular activities, and service hours, as well as an essay portion. A panel of NHS officers will review submissions using the student’s resume form, essay, and faculty input. Applicants will then be notified with their acceptance status.

If you believe that you are eligible to apply to NHS but did not receive an application, please contact the NHS advisor: aubrey.white@s.stemk12.org

Transfer Students

NHS membership is transferable from one active NHS chapter to another. Simply get a signed letter from your current school’s principal or adviser verifying membership. Be sure you notify one of the advisers of your NHS membership within 30 days of enrollment. You will automatically be granted membership, but will need to meet the eligibility requirements of our chapter at STEM School Highlands Ranch within a reasonable period of time, usually one semester. STEM School Highlands Ranch may have a higher cumulative GPA required for membership.

Membership in NJHS does not transfer to NHS. NJHS and NHS are two separate entities.
