Mr. Hitch completed his *50 mile run* and finished 3rd overall! Amazingly, he averaged a pace of 8:41 per mile and his finishing time was 7 hours, 15 minutes and 46 seconds.
What an incredible feat and congratulations to Mr. Hitch on your achievement!

STEM Graduate Gitanjali Rao Featured on Good Morning America For Invention

National Spotlight!
STEM graduate and now Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) freshman Gitanjali Rao was recently featured on Good Morning America for her creation of Kindly, an app she designed to put a stop to cyberbullying.
The app works similar to spellcheck, but instead lets the user know if they are about to text something that would be categorized as cyberbullying. Congratulations Gitanjali! You can check out the GMA feature here:

Lockheed Martin Guest Speaker Gives Materials Science Presentation To Secondary Students

All about materials!
A special thanks to guest speaker Arianne Lazaro, Senior Materials Engineer at Lockheed Martin Space for visiting STEM.
Arianne provided a fun introduction into the fascinating world of materials science and engineering! Students found out that materials science is the study of literally everything that makes up the world around us, and then Arianne took students through an exercise where the class discussed their own ideas for applications for materials such as Aerogels, Hydrogels, Metamaterials (Wave Bending) and Superhydrophobic Metals. One unique and cutting-edge material she introduced us to is called Prince Rupert’s Drop, which is a toughened glass created by rapidly cooling molten glass in water. Amazing!
