Spartans Post Strong Performances at deKoevend Park Meet

Neither torrential rain, nor hail, nor lightning would keep the Spartan harriers from their race last Friday at the Warrior XC Invite. Several season and/or personal bests were set on both sides once the sun came out. The river crossings were a tad rough due to the tremendous amount of water, so they needed to make some spur-of-the-moment changes:

For the varsity boys, Kylen Winslett and Lucian Kasperek led the Spartans. The varsity boys placed 22nd out of 28 teams overall in a very tough division.

For the varsity girls, Olivia Staab and Ellason Arendale led the way with season bests and to a 25th-place team finish. Also running a strong race was Abigail Hullinger.

While the Jr/Sr Boys Open squad placed 15th out of 16 teams, they had an impressive pack time from the #1 runner Ryan Byers to #4 runner Matthew Tewolde of only 10 seconds.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the gutsiest run of the day by Matthew Lee. At 100m into the race, he lost a shoe. Matthew ran the rest of the race with only 1 shoe and came close to a personal best despite that.

The Spartans race this Saturday at the Liberty Bell XC Invite at Heritage HS. The boys’ race will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by the girls 3 mins later. Get there early and cheer them on.

Thanks for your support of Spartan XC this season!
