Walking the Beat with Deputy Gabe

Sorry if last week I didn’t write anything for the weekly Walking the Beat with Deputy Gabe. I had a busy week, and then on Friday I was in training the whole day with the rest of the SROs. It was a good training day, and it was awesome to spend the day with my fellow SROs.

This week I want to cover a couple of things. One of them is to express my gratitude for so many messages and gestures on February 15th (National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day). I am unsure if you saw the video that STEM published on Facebook, but the love humbled me so many students and staff showed to me that day. I am not embarrassed to say that I even cried a little while walking the halls, seeing so many people clapping for me. I said this on a different occasion, but even though some days are challenging, I wouldn’t change this job for the world! I pray and hope that whatever I do here at STEM causes a positive impact on anyone I come in contact with. Thank you, everyone for so much love!

Now, let me get a tissue and focus on a different subject. As many of you know, we had a few things going on in our building today. A couple of drills and the visit of one of my furry friends (K-9 Scooter). As always, any time we do a drill, we always learn something new, right? That is why we train, why we practice, and why we are always looking for opportunities to improve. Even though we found ourselves juggling with a few challenges here and there, the visit of Scooter, and the two drills went well.

Students loved seeing Scooter around, and many of them really wanted to pet him (unfortunately, they couldn’t). Our friend Scooter was doing his job, and he visited a few classrooms looking for substances that should not be at school. He also visited the parking lot even though it was very cold. Please know that having a K-9 visit schools to perform a “sniff” is a common practice, and several schools in the county do that.

Well, enjoy the weekend. I think it will be warm tomorrow, so make sure to go out and play! Thank you for your continuous support. Let’s keep working hard to keep our students safe! I am very thankful for having the opportunity to be part of your student’s story. If you have questions about anything, including the visit of Scooter today, please email me at gabe.uribe@stemk12.org, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Hug your loved ones…smile to a stranger…believe it or not, that makes a difference in someone’s life.

GO SPARTANS!

Be safe!
