Today’s writing is going to be something like a “hotchpotch.” I am sorry I missed the last couple of weeks. The week before spring break, I got really busy, then Spring Break then I had a trainee with me the whole week. So… here we are again.
Some of you may have noticed that I have been walking around with different coworkers here and there. Somebody asked me the other day if I was training a replacement. Another parent asked me if I was planning on leaving. No, I am not training my replacement, nor am I planning on leaving STEM. As far as I know, I am still returning to STEM for the 2024-25 school year. The Sheriff’s Office has added several SROs to the Juvenile Unit, and some of my coworkers and I have been training them. They are doing a great job, so I am sure whatever schools they get assigned to will be lucky to have them.
The weather is getting warmer, the bicycles are being dusted, the scooters are being greased, and hopefully, the helmets are being worn. More and more students are coming to school riding their bikes or scooters. Please encourage your students to be responsible while riding these items to school. Make sure they wear their helmets. Please tell them to follow all traffic laws while riding on the street. If they ride on the sidewalk, please encourage them to wait a few seconds before crossing the street. Tell them to take 2 seconds to look on both sides and make sure no vehicles are running the red light or making a turn without seeing them. Thank you for your involvement in this!
In closing… as a reminder (given that I have addressed this in the past), please remind your students about the dangers of conversing with strangers over social media. I wish I could give you specific examples of the situations I have dealt with in the last few weeks, but please get involved in your student’s online world. I am not exaggerating when I say this (online world) is a dangerous world. There are so many dangerous things available to them instantly. I have always said that we need to teach our kids how to navigate the internet, just like we teach them how to swim. It’s one step at a time.
