One of the goals I have in mind every time I write something for the Newsletter is to be able to share with parents certain things that could be improved. It is not the only goal, but it is definitely a response to something that has happened and that could be avoided.
In the last few weeks, I have been approached by STEM Administrators to talk about the vehicles parked on Barrons Blvd right before the Elementary School driveline opens. For a while, a lot of the vehicles have been following the law when it comes to stopping in the middle of the road or stopping and parking where prohibited (by law and by a posted sign). I believe several attempts by the school have been made to appeal to our parents to follow the rules and the law. Unfortunately, we are not seeing compliance.
Please remember that the way you handle traffic outside STEM affects us all. Any violation of the traffic law and rules established by either STEM or other businesses around STEM affects the relationship our school has with local authorities and our neighbors. Please help us by becoming familiar with what you should and should not do. I am available to answer any questions you might have regarding this issue. I will not, however, engage in a conversation with you if you are still in your vehicle and all the cars are supposed to be moving along. If you want to chat, please park, come to the school and ask to see me.
Also, the parking area where the houses are (Ramblestone St) is private property. Some of the complaints I have received involved vehicles parked in front of the fire hydrant, vehicles parked partially blocking a driveway, vehicles parked too close to the intersection, and vehicles parked in parking spaces that are specifically intended for visitors.
I understand that Driveline might not be the best option for many parents, but if the alternative is to violate the law, then the alternative should not be considered. If you notice, right at the entrance of Ramblestone St from Gramercy, there is a notice posted warning that vehicles will be towed if parked in the visitor’s spots. If any vehicle is towed, it will be your responsibility to pay for all the expenses that this process carries. Remember that they are our neighbors, and we want to have the best relationship possible with them. Below I am sharing a reminder of some parking restrictions from the Traffic Law. According to C.R.S. 42-4-1204, no vehicle should park in any of the following places:
- Within five feet of a public or private driveway;
- Within fifteen feet of a fire hydrant;
- Within twenty feet upon the approach to any flashing beacon or signal, stop sign, wield, yield sign, or traffic control signal located at the side of the road.
- At any other place where official signs prohibit stopping.
These are just a few. I encourage you to please take a look at the statute from the Traffic Code I mentioned above for more restrictions. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping with the normal fluid of traffic around STEM.
