Several times during the week I have interactions with students who want to know more about what is considered a crime and what is not. In general, I encourage them to read the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS), specifically the 18th Code. That’s a lot of information, so I am almost positive they don’t read it (which I understand why they wouldn’t).
The main thing I explain to them is that it is important to become familiar with the law as not knowing the law does not represent an affirmative defense if they break it.
In the last few days, I have heard about some items being taken by people who don’t own them. Taking something of value that belongs to someone else is called Theft. No formal reports had been brought to my attention (as reporting a crime), but at one point, unfortunately, the situation might end up on my desk.
It is my hope that this situation will be under control through the involvement of parents and the school. So please chat with your child about this and have them come to see me if they want to understand more about theft and its consequences.
