It has been quite a few weeks since the last time I wrote something for Walking the Beat. It was right before the break. Well, my break was not bad. I spent some good quality time with my wife and kids. I also worked a few days doing patrol, which I have always enjoyed doing. Returning to patrol helps me stay in touch with some skills that can’t be forgotten.
I also want to be a little personal. Right before we came back to school after the winter break, I had to travel out of the country. While on patrol, I was notified that my mother was not doing well and that I probably needed to travel to Brazil. My mom moved to Brazil from Venezuela almost three years ago to be closer to my younger brother. As I was buying plane tickets, I was told by my brother that my sweet momma had passed away. I went on the next day to Brazil and stayed there for 10 days, supporting my brother, my grandma and also receiving support from them. Because of that, I could not be here at STEM when all the students and staff returned.
Let me explain to you why I am sharing so much. I don’t really have a problem being open about circumstances like the one I just experienced. If anything, this shows others that I go through the same things others go through. Also, I wanted to tell you how amazing your students were. I received so many cards, posters, notes, and words of encouragement in the halls. It did so much good to my heart to come back and feel the love from everyone. I was reminded that the job I do here matters and that a lot of people care for me. I am not trying to make this about me, and I am just sharing with you how an act of kindness, like words of support, can make someone feel so much better. So, thank you for instilling in your children that sentiment of care and empathy for others.
Now, just like I have said in the past, being kind to others can change the outcome of a day. Safety and kindness are related and go hand in hand. We can have a safer school by treating everyone with respect, kindness, and empathy.
